Sudbury resident and preschool music teacher Ellen Hoffman developed MAKING MUSIC 13 years ago. It not only enhances and develops a child's love of music, it uses music to teach educational concepts and stimulate a child's creativity and imagination by incorporating a number of music therapy and early childhood education philosophies. The emphasis is on learning through discovery. Groups are usually small, so that every child (and parent) gets the same instrument to play per activity (no waiting for a turn!) with an average of 7 musical activities during each lively class. Add balls, books, pom-poms, puppets, teddy bears and more to the mix of instruments, and you have 45 minutes of pure musical fun.
Ellen encourages the use of imagination - where drums and mallets become pots and spoons; sandblocks become airplanes, train cars, gas pedals, or snow plows; rhythm sticks become oars, letters of the alphabet, violins, walrus tusks, and ski poles; and pom-poms become brooms, paintbrushes, silly hair, or a horse's tail.
Articles about Ellen Hoffman and MAKING MUSIC haves appeared in the Sudbury Town Crier, MetroWest News, Boston Parents Magazine, and the Boston Globe. Ellen has given presentations at numerous libraries in the greater Boston area, and teaches or has taught at Steppingstones Preschool, Kids a Lot, Beth El,and First Friends. She has also done workshops geared especially for teachers and librarians to demonstrate how to blur the lines between rhythm and reading, instruments and imagination, music and movement.
